One of the long-lasting projects supported by ProtIn consultancy is that on developing the portable haemodialysis device for kidney patients to enable them a daily dialysis at home. This will provide patients depending on regular dialysis a major increase in the quality of life and life expectation. One of the crucial elements in the disposable cartridge to be used on a daily basis is that of a protein (enzyme) that is embedded in the cartridge to break down urea that is accumulated in the blood and very toxic. Dialysis removes this compound from the blood but needs to be broken down enzymatically in the dialysis fluid.
